How I started...

When my kids were little, baking/decorating was a hobby that provided a creative outlet for me. As a stay-at-home mom, I made cakes for friends and family just for fun. And as my kids became older, I entertained the idea of turning my hobby into a business. But it wasn't until later in life, after a terrible loss and some difficult years, that I would come back to that idea. It was in 2014 when I finally decided it was time for a new beginning, and Custom Cakes by Adele was born.

In 2009, my husband of 17 years was suddenly diagnosed with cancer; and, after a grueling yearlong battle, he passed away. Our whole world fell apart. My kids were 12 and 13 at the time. We spent years grieving and trying to find a new normal. The kitchen was one of the few places where I found comfort - baking, designing, and decorating cakes was cathartic. Baking was a simple task I could predict and control. Decorating was an art that distracted me from grief. It helped me learn to focus again; and, it gave me the opportunity to feel happy again.

This business was born from a hobby that helped me through a very painful time. But since then it has become a passion and a full-time, family-run business!

And then Mike and I found each other...

I met Mike in 2015. Like me, he had endured a great loss – his wife of 28 years passed away from a sudden heart attack. And much like my family, his family's world fell apart too. But, as we got to know each other, we found that our broken pieces fit nicely together. We were able to see through the grief we’d been carrying for so long and look forward to a future together. We were married two years later; and, Mike (who is originally from Missouri) moved to the Lehigh Valley and joined me in the bakery.

We now run this business together. Mike has an extensive art background, as well as years of business management experience, so he is involved with every aspect of running our business. Although the art of creating cakes was new to him, he took to it very quickly and fell in love with the process. Mike LOVES working on unique specialty and 3D cakes. And when his beloved Kansas City Chiefs aren't playing, he can be found enjoying the outdoors. Being the more extroverted one, you may find him heading up our table at some of the local bridal fairs.

We both feel very blessed and grateful that our stories didn't end in sadness, but merged together to create a whole new journey for the second half of our lives. And we truly believe this business is an important part of that journey. We look forward to meeting every new client who comes our way and creating an amazing cake for each one of them!

Giving Back....

Since we started, Custom Cakes by Adele has donated to a number of charities/organizations. It is our goal each year to give back to our community. Many times, we do this in a quiet way; other times, we try to raise awareness for a cause that has touched our hearts. Sometimes, we donate cakes to a particular organization. And several times each year, we promote a cause with one of our cupcake sales and donate a portion of our sales to it.
